Cutting damage claims on cat furniture shipments

Crushed corners drive returns and refunds; carton design and loading discipline cut claims more than extra padding does.

A crushed corner on a cat tree is not a cosmetic issue. The customer photographs it, opens a claim, and you absorb the return freight on a parcel that may be 0.18 cubic metres and weigh 14 kg. At £28 to £40 per return leg, two claims can wipe out the margin on a ten-unit order. Damage rates on flat-packed furniture routinely run 4 to 8 per cent when cartons are single-wall and corners are unprotected. That is a cost line, not bad luck.

Start with the carton. A double-wall BC-flute box with internal corner protectors and a moulded pulp or EPS end-cap at each of the four vertical edges will handle most drops. Carton sizes matter as much as strength: a 1200 x 400 x 380 mm box ships at better freight per cubic metre than an oversized 1300 x 450 x 420 mm box with void fill. Every 10 per cent of cube you remove is 10 per cent off ocean or road freight, and less movement inside the carton means fewer scuffed panels.

Loading discipline is where most suppliers fail. Ask for a drop test to ISTA 3A or equivalent and a photo record of the pallet build. Mixed SKUs stacked with heavy bases on top of lighter shelves is the usual cause of the crushed corner your customer photographs. Specify corner boards on the pallet, limit stack height to three cartons, and require the factory to photograph every pallet before stretch-wrapping.

Warranty claims and damage claims are separate numbers. Track them separately. A 2 per cent damage rate at landed cost of £34 against a £99 retail price leaves room to absorb a replacement part; a 6 per cent rate does not.
