Tooling, minimums and packaging push true OEM cat tree cost well past the unit price quoted by the factory.
The number that sinks most private-label cat tree programs is not the unit price. It is the freight per cubic metre on a carton you approved without measuring. A typical 60 cm floor-to-platform tree ships in a carton around 62 x 42 x 18 cm, roughly 0.047 cbm. At USD 95 per cbm on a mixed container, that is about USD 4.50 per unit before you touch the product. Bulk up the base and the carton grows; the tree that retails at USD 79 may now carry USD 7 of freight, and your margin per square foot of retail shelf collapses.
Minimums set the real floor. Most Asian factories will not open a private-label run under 200 to 500 units, and that is where the tooling conversation starts. Custom base shapes, embossed platform edges or a proprietary connector need a mould: USD 800 to USD 3,000, amortised across your first order. At MOQ 10 units through a trading intermediary, you are usually buying stock goods with a label, not OEM. Ask which it is before you sign.
Packaging is the quiet cost. A printed colour box with your brand runs USD 1.20 to USD 2.50 per unit at 500 pieces, and a dieline change adds a one-time plate fee. Drop the box for e-commerce and switch to a plain shipper with a printed label: cheaper per unit, but damage claims rise because the box no longer protects corners in parcel networks. Budget 2 to 4 percent of order value for warranty and damage claims on dropshipping, against under 1 percent for palletised retail delivery.
Work backwards from landed cost. If your retail price is USD 89 and you need 55 percent margin, landed cost must sit near USD 40: ex-works plus freight, duty, packaging and claims. Model every line before you commit to a mould.
