Wobbly towers and wrong-size platforms drive cat furniture returns; carton size and construction spec decide your margin.
Cat furniture returns more than anything else on your floor, and the numbers point to two causes: instability and platform sizing. A 72-inch tower built on a 15-by-15-inch base with 12mm particleboard will sway on carpet and walk across hard floors. The customer assembles it, watches it rock, and ships it back. That return costs you outbound freight, inbound freight, and a carton that no longer closes cleanly.
Freight is the second squeeze. A typical 60-inch tower ships in a carton around 61 by 17 by 6 inches, roughly 0.10 cubic metres. At LCL rates of $180 to $260 per cubic metre, that is $18 to $26 per unit before it reaches your DC. Bulky 24-inch platforms push cartons past 0.14 cubic metres and cut units per pallet from 24 to 16. Your freight per unit rises faster than your retail price.
Platform sizing drives the wrong-size complaints. Sisal-wrapped perches listed at 16 inches often measure 14.5 inches after wrapping, and a 14-pound Maine Coon will not settle on either. State the usable interior dimension on the product page, not the outer diameter. That single change removes a predictable slice of returns.
Landed cost discipline matters more here than in any other category. A tower that lands at $46 and retails at $129 carries a 64% margin, but one return at $30 in combined freight and refurbishment wipes out the profit on two more sales. At MOQ 10 units, test a single SKU before committing shelf space. Dropshipping avoids the carton on your floor but hands damage claims to your supplier, so confirm who absorbs transit damage in writing.
Warranty claims cluster on joints, not fabric. Ask for the fixing spec: M8 bolts through a metal bracket outlast wood screws into particleboard every time.
